The Gamification Guru: Learning 2017

Hi All,

This week in Orlando, Elliot Maise and team brought Learning 2017 to the East Coast. I am fortunate enough to attend this event and am excited to share with you some of my learnings so far!

Day 1 was on Monday and one of the sessions featured the gamification guru himself- Karl Kapp! I attended this session particularly because we read some of his work in previous semesters and I was interested to hear what he had to say!

Of course, we focused on gamification but rather than talking about it, we jump right into a game that Kapp created called Zombie Sales Apocalypse.

After playing the game, Kapp clarified the use of playing the game replaced role-play and a few logistics. Someone asked how he produced the cards we used and Kapp shared a fantastic resource . This site allows a designer, or anyone, for that matter to create customize cards. Kapp explained the benefit of this is it allows you to design with the audience in mind. In the case of the Zombie Apocalypse, this could work really well for a medical audience, but maybe not so well for a tech audience. One audience can relate to interacting with blood, another does not have the same experience.

Another strong point Kapp made was that game play allows for deep learning and critical thinking. Whereas using a game like Jeopardy does not. Think about the structure of each….Jeopardy is a regurgitation while card games encourage strategy and planning. See the difference?

Lastly, how Kapp conducted the session was really engaging. He encouraged us to use our phones to vote on different facts through a site called Pollev. This allowed the room to see the responses roll in, in real time. I would be interested to this implemented in an ILT (Instructor Led training aka classroom) to encourage interaction and participation. It might even be more interested if this could somehow be simulated in an eLearning. (Maybe through the use of “fake” responses coming in, then revealing to learning the answers…).

I am looking forward to the next couple of days and the potential for learning!

Cheers!
